Oh EEK, recalling her victory speech for Holyrood last year I suppose she called that "spirited" too. To most she sounded like a typical Glesga keelie looking for a brawl.

Personally I was hoping she'd get Labour leader in Holyrood, but she's got some reet tough competition there...

A Labour MP used almost £500,000 of taxpayers' money over six years to help run an office from his home which was staffed by his wife.

David Marshall, 67, who has quit to spark the Glasgow East by-election on July 24, used the expenses to pay for a constituency office and staff.

But Mr Marshall's office was in his semi-detached Glasgow home and he employed his wife Tina as his secretary. It is also believed he paid his daughter Christina to work from his home from the same pool of money.

A Commons spokesman said MPs can use their home as an office but only claim for additional costs like 'extra phone lines, heating and lighting'.

From 2001-2007, Mr Marshall claimed £91,000 incidental expenses provision, which is used to pay for constituency offices, plus £400,000 for staff and £11,000 for their travel expenses.


He listed only one member of staff on the Commons register - Christina Marshall. It was unclear if this was his wife Tina or daughter Christina.

Neighbours and political sources said his wife had worked for him - with Labour ex-Minister Brian Wilson saying that Mrs Marshall had worked for her husband as a constituency secretary.

Mr Marshall is said to be suffering clinical depression. Party sources said he felt 'under pressure' over the expenses allegations.


The family refuses to comment on why he spent so much on office expenses, why he ran an office from home and what family members were on his payroll.

Very wise of Mr Marshall to jump when he did. Labour no doubt wanted a candidate with the common touch to stand in Glasgow East. Ms Curran fits the bill perfectly. She isn't standing because she doesn't fancy being leader of the opposition - is she?

I think we could all be forgiven for assessing the Labour Party as entirely dishonest. Entirely is such a sweeping statement but I wonder if we could count now the articles or the Labour councillors, MSPs or MPs involved in situations which highlight their dishonesty.

In Westminster, the only other real option is the Conservative party or a coalition. How much better are the Conservatives considering the first thing they will do is to privatise the NHS. They did not have a good reputation when they were in power for so many years. Maybe that is the problem maybe we should reduce the time between elections, as the politicians seem to get very complacent when they feel power is indestructible.

A coalition may keep them on their toes when you consider that each minority party would not rest until each example of dishonesty is brought before the public.

Gone are the days when people entered politics to change our country for the better.

Our bright hope in Scotland is the SNP. It will be many years though before Scotland sees the benefit of Independence, unfortunately not in my lifetime.

Oh dear, Lydia. Are you not feeling well? The holes are lining up in the unionist Swiss cheese. I am hoping for a Yes vote in the 2010 referendum leading to independence within a decade.

It is not ill health or depression that prompted that statement. Thank you for caring though.

Although I do have an ingrown toenail would you like to hear all about it.

I agree with your post but I am being realistic. I hope for all you hope for. I believe we have the right First Minister.

The only thing that is a bit depressing is that I have wanted and supported an independent Scotland all my adult life and I will probably pop my clogs before it actually arrives.

I can cope with kicking the bucket I know where I am going. Hopefully I wont go ga ga
