Margaret Curran MSP

Yes the same Margaret Curran who resigned in 1980 as vice-chair of the Glasgow Uni Labour Club
following allegations of involvement in an attempt to rig the conference of the National
Organisation of Labour Students.

Strange that the sitting MP David Marshall resigned "on health grounds" around the same time that
an investigation was underway into his Westminster expenses.

Of course, Curran was only the 3rd choice Labour candidate (at best).

First choice, George Ryan, chose not to stand "for family reasons", probably unrelated to the
expected Standards Commission of Scotland investigation into the Paddy's Market scandal - a
dodgy land deal in which several Glasgow Labour councillors (including Ryan) are involved.

Councillor Steven Purcell, the second choice, is another involved in the Paddy's Market deal.

As is Councillor Stephen Curran, who happens to be the son of, yes, Margaret Curran.

The same Margaret Curran who was election agent for Mohammed Sarwar when he was charged
with election offences in 1997.

And to complete the circle, Christina Marshall, daughter of ex-MP David, was at the centre of the
"Wishawgate" scandal in 2003, where large sums of money disappeared from Jack McConnell's
constituency office.

Hells teeth, Darkside!! Where did you dig all that up from?

I won't hold my breath waiting for it to appear in the mainstream media, right enough.

Nice to see the Currans are keeping it in the family with politics, eh? A councillor already!! He must be talented beyond his years...

There must be a few MSPs and MPs in the Labour party who are honest. It is a wonder they are not leaving just to protect their own reputations. Eventually they must work in the public sector, their chances of staying in office don't look good.

What is harder to understand is why people still vote for Labour. Darkside it is a pity you could not print that list and distribute it in the by-election. It is not against any law to tell the truth.

It sounds like a good idea Lydia but there are very strict rules surrounding putting out "political" leaflets especially around election time so if anyone is thinking of doing this then they should check with the candidate they are wanting to help and perhaps seek legal advice. It is not what you are saying in the leaflet but the legalities of printing, publishing and funding of the leaflet.
It shouldn't put you off though as it can be great fun and you can really make a difference. I did it (not during an election) with one of my friends when I was politically active back in the 90s. The councillors' expenses had just been published and there was one Labour councillor's expenses that were particularly high. We put out a leaflet pointing out the amount he was claiming and also what that mean to the average family budget. So, for example, he was claiming more every week for meals than the average weekly family shopping budget. We pointed out what his claim for petrol amounted to in terms of car use etc. In fact with that one it was hard to see how he could do anything but drive for 24 hrs a day, 7 days a week.
We had to be careful though (we were not putting it out as an party political leaflet) that we got the wording right etc for the legal stuff - we sought legal advice. The Labour Party said they were going to sue us for £250,000 but of course they couldn't as we had done everything to the letter of the law. The reaction we got was terrific and the councillor never put in a big claim like that again.

Meant to say also, darkside, this information is very interesting and thanks for taking the time to put it all together.

More on Curran's lies, courtesy of MediaWatch:

From Will Paterson,Chorley

Hi there,

Thought you might be interested to know that I've done a bit of digging for my own blog on Margaret Curran's claim that she voted to support a second UN resolution on Iraq back in 2003, as quoted on stv last week. A quick check of the Official Report for the two debates in January and March that year show that Curran voted for amendments which removed calls for a second resolution, and the text of the amended motions she supported simply noted that there were attempts to secure one. So she's been lying again and yet the press haven't bothered to fact-check her. And despite that, Labour huff and puff about SNP bias!

I've referred to the motions she supported at this page:
