GLASGOW EAST – SHOCKWAVES FELT AROUND THE WORLD
The SNP today highlighted the international impact of John Mason’s victory
in the Glasgow East by-election on Thursday.
During the campaign the SNP received visits by German, Irish and American
journalists. Following the SNP’s victory on Thursday the impact on Gordon
Brown and the Labour Government has been played out around the world.
Commenting on the global interest in Scottish politics and the SNP’s
success SNP Westminster leader Angus Robertson said;
“Thursday’s by-election has sent shockwaves around the world. The SNP’s
success has had a huge international impact.
“The Glasgow East by-election has generated more international interest in
any Scottish by-election since Hamilton.
“Scotland and the Scottish Government took a step up on the world stage
with the SNP’s victory in 2007. The SNP Government’s outward looking
agenda and impressive first year in power has kept the international press
enthralled with developments in Scotland.
“Victory in Labour’s former heartlands has only increased the interest in
Scottish politics and Scotland’s future.”
“When Winnie Ewing won Hamilton in 1967 she issued the enduring line “Stop
the world. Scotland wants to get on." With the international interest in
this by-election, the SNP Government’s progress, Scotland’s increasingly
strong links around the world and international interest in the National
Conversation Scotland is once again making her mark.”
