TOPIC: Call for new Lockerbie enquiry

Call for new Lockerbie enquiry 2 Months, 2 Weeks ago Karma: 7
As doubts have surfaced regularly about some of the so called "facts" presented at the original trial a new public enquiry has been long overdue.
Last year the Scottish Criminal Cases Review Commission said Megrahi had grounds for an appeal, including a possible miscarriage of justice because the Crown had not disclosed a document which an unidentified country had provided to the UK government in 1996.

Dr Koechler said the Kamp Zeist trial was not independent or impartial, and that the presence of FBI agents in the court added to the "appearance of outside influence". He also said there is evidence "rewards" involving millions of dollars were paid to prosecution witnesses.

Dr Koechler has also commented about the latest wheeze from the Westminster government. They are to appoint a specially vetted defence counsel who will have access to the documents that they say would threaten security if made public. Are they being controlled by the US government who introduced this idea in the military tribunals of Guantanamo detainees.

Dr Koechler has described this is "detrimental to the rule of law." "In no country can the situation be allowed where the accused or the appellant is not free to have his own defence team, and instead someone is imposed upon him."

Is it not time that the Scottish government showed some action? Justice is a devolved matter. Alex Salmond has intervened to prevent Al Megrahi being sent back to Libya to avoid the embarrassment of a re-trial. It is now the general belief that the original trial was fixed and subsequent appeals were also miscarriages of justice. Alex Salmond should clear the matter up once and for all and as soon as possible.
