Whatever you think of George Galloway, he does have an extremely good point.

He says........there was "grotesque irony" that Parliament had refused to hold a full inquiry into the Iraq war, but had spent four years "censuring one of the leaders of the anti-war movement for the way that they conducted the anti-sanctions, anti-war campaign".

Well what does he expect? He made a worldwide fool of himself by licking Saddam's backside on TV. Then he set up a "charity" that paid for him and his wife to fly round the world in business class. He made a song and dance about saving one injured Iraqi girl - then nothing. The "charity" has never published any accounts as it is required to do by law and now it's being investigated by the Charity Commission.
None of the above detracts from the valid point that the Labour government has behaved very badly during the whole Iraq fiasco. Gorgeous George is however no stranger to grotesque ironies himself.

Mark Steel's article in today's Independent is worth a read. Why, he asks, is Parliament making Galloway the only fall guy for Iraq?

Somehow, however, the diligent committee seems to have missed other possible examples of the house being brought into disrepute, such as a Prime Minister taking the country into war because "I have no doubt that Saddam possesses weapons of mass destruction - absolutely no doubt, no doubt whatsoever."

And insisting we could be attacked in 45 minutes when he knew this was bollocks; and ignoring his own intelligence that this would make us targets for terrorism; and ignoring the UN and the weapons inspectors, so assisting in the creation of mass carnage, while he swans off to make millions from his memoirs.

Well, everybody knew he was always going to be set up as the patsy.
The latest is that he may stand against Jack Straw at the next election, what a mouth-watering prospect.

He's an able enough politician but for me he lost all credibility when he appeared on the modern day Bedlam that is "Big Brother".

"Would you like meeee.......

.....to be the caaaat?"

No. Go away.

Post edited by: dws, at: 2007/08/05 11:10

In today's (English) The Independant, 'Top cat of the talk shows' gives an interesting insight into George. I'm crap at giving links but it's in the media section-27/8/07. As politicians go, I have to take my hat off to George. I probably wouldn't trust him as far as I can throw him but at least there's something more 'human' about him (faults and all) than the drones in the Labour and Conservative parties. They probably don't like him because he's smarter than most of them and has a sense of humor.

Yes, he probably is - he's eloquent and has a fine sense of the dramatic.

He's also mad as a box of frogs!

P.S. This is the link, DMA

Thanks for the link, dws. The Independant is my paper of choice. 'Computers for idiots' was even above my head; I'm not very computer savvy. Yes, George is a live wire. I loved his gig in Washington before the Senate commitee.

I wish we had more like him, people who speak their mind and you know where they stand and you can vote for them or not.

Unlike the rest who are focus-grouped into whatever message will get them votes in the "key constituencies".

There's an interesting documentary by Adam Curtis on the BBC called the "Century of Self" that deals with "New Labour" and Blair in the last two programmes.

Galloway was his usual self last night on Question Time, though he gave his British credentials as ever, seemingly oblivious for such a clever man that Britain's existence is what causes the foreign policy he so abhors.

He did say that Alex Salmond was far too bright a politician, along with his colleagues to lay the ball of separation at his feet because a goal will be scored, Scotland will get Independence unless the Westminster government did something he reckoned.

He failed to elaborate on what exactly he meant or what that 'something' would be, or have any sort of plan right enough!

This is because his interests don't rely on British politics, and are a mile away from what Scots think about their democracy.
