I hope not...I don't believe half the things he says...But then again when can you believe a politician...
They are all going crazy here for him because of his campaign "The Change" or something like that...he is promoting more his color than anything else.
I couldn't care if he was purple...

Half his family are black and half are white what does that make him, American by any chance. he has chosen to go with the I am black Barack Obama. Why? I have to say though I did not hear one mention of his colour from him during any of his speeches.

A powerful speech, he is asking for unity between black and white but showing honestly that he will fight to ensure the fair treatment of blacks and other racial minorities. Although he is stating that, all should be equal no matter the race he points out quite clearly that the black American is treated as a second-class citizen and this can no longer continue but also pointing out that the help given could benefit the economy of America.
I see nothing wrong with those policies but I am not sure they will get him elected.
He, I think, in that speech is also saying honestly that ignoring the racial tensions will get America nowhere. That this time the whole issue of racial tension and inequality should be dealt with but realistically saying this will not happen today.
If all he states is true if all he states he will do is carried out then he could be a good leader but I am a cynic when dealing with politicians. Time will tell.
Thanks Robin I enjoyed that very interesting

I'm late getting into this discussion but, just so you know, we've been constantly bombarded with the US campaign as well. You are not alone!
Being politically left-leaning myself, I can't help but hope Barack Obama will get in, but I'm thoroughly sick and tired of hearing about the US election. I saw more covereage on that than our own election which happens Tuesday the 14th of October (four days!). If any of you care at all about Canada, please pray for us and hope that Stephen Harper doesn't get back in again. He's just a George Bush wannabe. Evil and stupid are a bad combination!

I'm not sure how well McCain's going to do now Palin has opened her mouth and shown how vaccuous her brain really is. I've chatted with lots of people of all age groups... and it surprised me that it was the older folks that were dead against her and pro Obama.
But ona more sinister mode, I've also heard talk of nutty right wing WASPS doing unto Obama = if he gets elected- what was done unto Kennedy.
Let's hope sanity prevails.

I think that that's a real fear, I'm afraid. We've got some nasty right-wingers here but I get the impression that they look quite liberal when compared to some of the groups on your side of the pond.

What do you think the chances of the Conservatives being returned? I used to follow politics in Canada quite closely as I had an uncle who was an MP there at one time but I am afraid I am a bit ignorant of what goes on now. I don't think Harper seems to present a very positive view of Canadians as I've read several comments he has made where he appears to be running them down. Who would want that for your PM? (We of course have the same thing here with Gordon Brown and the Labour Party.)
(Sorry guys, but I haven't figured out how to put other people's quotes in boxes yet.)
The Conservatives could get in yet...but I doubt they'll have much luck here in Nova Scotia! They haven't exactly endeared themselves to us here. Stephen Harper has said that Nova Scotia has a "defeatist attitude" and a few other things that rubbed us the wrong way. Ontario and one or two western provinces may have enough voting power to get them back in, but they'll be stuck with a minority government again which will get them exactly where their last minority government got them - nowhere.
And I second what TLJ and Weegible said about the right wing groups in the states. Sadly, I don't believe Barack Obama will be president for long. He'll be the next JFK.

It's easy. There are two ways:
1) just use the quote button at the end of the post you want to quote from and edit out the bits you don't need or want
or
2) copy and paste the bit you want to quote then put {quote} at the start of it and {/quote} at the end - but change these brackets to square ones as if I'd used the square ones when showing you, all you would have got was a box !!

A historic victory in more ways than one. At last, a black-American president but also the level of turnout, the size of the victory and some of the swings which have taken place are quit3 unbelieveable.
But,as you say, let's hope that sense and calm prevail amongst the lunatic fringe; unfortunately, I don't think it will.
And I hope the children enjoy the puppy !

I'm relieved that Mr Obama won and he seems to be quite a sensible fellow too. However why is everybody so excercised about him being the first "black" president? More than half of the population of the US is female but there's never been a woman in the top job. In general I think we should forget all this nonsense about encouraging ethnic minorities into positions of power and remember that women aren't fully represented in public life. Our Parliament has set a good example but there's a lot more to do yet.
