I notice that he was subjected to a current for 1.5 seconds only. I wonder how long the tazer current will be applied to members of the public?

I would imagine about the same - minimum use of force applies. Once the subject desists from, for example, trying to slice someone up with a samurai sword the current will cease.

I checked the article and the taser used was set at a strength of 50kV. The norm seems to be 100kV and guns that use up to 1MV (1,000kV) are available according to wiki at

I think I'd want a lot more information - and safeguards- before approving it's use as an everyday thing.

The Tazer has already been introduced in certain forces as a less lethal option to firearms. I think I'd rather be zapped than shot - but I get your point, and I don't think they'l become personal issue.

How long before tazers fall into the hands of the criminally inclined? But m'lord, the bobbies say they are harmless, they even use them on each other.

"The bobbies" have said nothing of the sort, and what's your point about criminals getting their hands on them? They've been accessible for ages, as they're legal across the pond. Do you think that police not having them means any would-be user would think "Oh, well - the police don't use them so I won't either"?

Or should the police just stick with firearms - is that what you suggest?
