Work to lay Edinburgh's tram tracks starts on Monday as pavements and kerbs on Leith Walk are moved to make way for the new infrastructure. The work will be done in 200m sections, firstly to widen the road and then to lay the tracks.

I hope it will all have been worthwhile. I think it will be.

It's a stupendous sum of money that I suspect could have been better spent on other traffic projects in and around Edinburgh. However, unlike Glasgow, at least they're doing something contructive.

I lived in Edinburgh for over 10 years when trams ran almost everywhere. They were inexpensive, reasonably quick and very convenient. There was no need to run a car, but I soon found the joy of being a motorcyclist, however, the cobbles when wet were a real hazard.
I agree TLJ the investment will be worthwhile, and will be a boon for locals and visitors alike.

No doubt those before and after photos will be worth a fortune in years to come.

I remember the upgrade to Edinburgh's tram system after the 1939/45 war. New rails were laid during the night using acetylene flares to light the scene. The noise in laying the rails was loud in the extreme. Cobbles were then laid with boiling pitch cooking (gassing us), and then poured between them.

Sleep deprivation was another feature, and another was the many cars that found themselves stranded in the space destined for the cobbles. Fumes were blamed for the stranding, alcohol was never mentioned.

How is it going to cut down traffic woodsysdad, the love affair with the car is the problem, not trams.

Enjoy the upheaval.
