I really enjoyed this film. Normally I avoid films like this as weepy, sentimental, romantic crap - a chick flick. But "she who must be obeyed" insisted and I'm glad she did. The acting was great, the sets lavish, the score excellent, and the cinema-photography faultless. Well worth seeing.

Scunnert scores it 4 out of 5

Scunnert:

"Acting" and "Kiera Knightly" do not go together in the same sentence, she has all the presence of a brick and an equal amount of acting ability.

Sorry, but I'd rather nail my tongue to my desk than watch her one-dimensional "acting".

We'd better agree to disagree on this one, neebor...

Hiya Scunny. I thought McAvoy was excellent in this but Kiera Knightley wasn't anything special acting wise although I think that's because she wasn't called upon to do anything other than look gorgeous in fabulous gowns and smoke!

I was disappointed overall, possibly because of the hype surrounding the movie, and I think really it was over-rated. It really didn't deserve an oscar so it was kind of right I think that another movie won Best Film. McAvoy is definitely one to watch tho. He's a marvellous actor.

Dws oh, you're a cruel person!

I think Knightley was fine in the role - a willowy beauty from the leisured classes - but like Clare says she wasn't really called on to really "act". No - but McAvoy was great as was the wee lassie Saoirse Ronan.

I didn't realize it had been nominated for an Academy Award - I'm really out of touch - don't watch the telly anymore.

Scunny, well yes, she does willowy very well, and she smouldered a lot. The only time I seem to smoulder is if the top of my ciggy has fallen off and the sofa's on fire!

Scunnert,

Atonement was nominated for something like seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture. I can't remember if it won one for Best Musical Score....didn't watch the Oscars, only passively read the results somewhere. It's a film I want to see, on my list of DVDs to buy when I can afford to splurge on such things.

Atonement has to be better than Titanic was....now that was an over-rated movie, imo. lol

Last time I smouldered Clare I got my face slapped. Must be something only willowy women can get away with.

And here was I thinking it was an obscure wee film that nobody had heard of. I am sooo out of touch - my grandkids probably laugh at me behind my back!
