I can't think of anything to add to what everyone else has said, other than to pass on my condolences and assurance of prayers for Shane and his family (extended!).
God bless.

Thanks Martin it is difficult to think of something different to say.

What is a comfort is the people who have said prayers for this little boy. Thank you for yours.

Thank you Jamiekens,

We will I am sure at some time find the reason for his birth and death. Maybe not.

His strength and fight to stay will teach us a lesson for all time. We know he at peace with no more pain or struggle and that alone is a comfort.

Lydia, I've read this thread and been touched by the kind wishes and concern of everybody here for baby Shane and his parents. I didn't contribute before because as a non believer I didn't think there was anything I could say that would make any difference. I don't think there is a reason for birth or death other than happenstance otherwise why do babies die or bad things befall us? Like everyone else I've had my share of loss but I see it as the roll of the dice and a good reason to make the most of every day you've got because it might be the last.
Memories are a precious thing to us all, believers or not and Shane's parents will always have something of their baby to treasure. They will though, forever wonder why.

I suppose Lev we all just have our own belief. Shane's Dad is like me Catholic; his mum is like you and technically has no religion. I discovered during this awful time that she wanted prayers for her son. She would not have a Catholic Baptism or Requiem Mass for him but wanted so many of our little touches for him. He was buried with a rosary and a cross for instance as well as all the little teddies and toys. My way of dealing with all of this was to simply try to get everything she wanted for her child. She is his mum and has the right to choose. Her confusion was obvious and so understandable though.

My heart was breaking to see him go to God with no Baptism or last rights but it is not my decision and I would not suggest it as we had discussed this previously, I knew her views.

Now her memories are just pain, eventually it will improve but not yet, it is too soon. She like me seems to take comfort from the fact that one day she may find a reason for his birth and death.

When my youngest son died many years ago, I felt nothing but anger at everyone. Most of my anger I kept for God who in my view at that time did not exist. My favourite saying for a long time afterwards was something along the lines of, there is no God and anyway I hate him for what he did to my son. I have grown a little since then in all ways thankfully.

Years later Lev because of what happened to my son, I started, and now run the organisation that has and I hope will continue to help many parents and will change many more laws. If my son had not been born and died I probably would be very ignorant of this subject and certainly would not do the work I do. I believe that is why he was born and died. Just the experience I had, I hope, has helped many families. Probably the most important point being that is what comforts me Lev.

When my oldest son died, I do not believe I would have kept my sanity if I did not believe. For those of us who do believe it is a case of not blaming God but knowing that no matter how bad things get he will be beside you.

Have you ever read footsteps lev? It is all about a man complaining that God deserted him in his hour of need; he makes the point that only one set of footsteps can be seen in the sand. God replies but when things are that bad the reason for only one set of footsteps is because I am carrying you during the worst times.

I am thankful for the comfort I can give Shane’s Mum I do not believe in pushing my religion down any person’s throat but during this time, I felt she gained comfort from the fact that so many people said prayers for him. She loves the fact that I take her nine-month-old girl that I look after so often to mass to light a candle for the baby.

I believe people will find God when it is their time to do so and no matter your belief right now my hope for all including you is that one day you will feel this love, trust, and comfort that I feel and that in your hour of need God will find you. It is in my view the best comfort and the best life I can wish for any person. Blessings Lev.

The Blessings are so well meant just take them with good grace.

As I've said before in another thread (in reply to Robbie I think) I always respect the offer of prayers when they are made by people I know have a deep faith in a god. I'm sure Shane's mother felt uplifted by the support of so many people both known and unknown to her even in the midst of the horrible things she was going through.
Thank you for your kind wishes.

Hi Lev, I'm quite sad that you felt, to an extent, excluded from this. If I can presume to speak for Lydia, don't underestimate the effect the good wishes of an atheist can have. I think they could be described as non-religious prayers, if there can be such a thing, and always very welcome and helpful.

I hope I'm saying this correctly Lydia.

I too have been moved by this thread.

Hi Martin I could not have put that any better.

Lev I am so glad that eventually you felt you could contribute. I think if you go back to my first post I said prayers or good wishes or what ever your belief, thank you.

Thank you Jamiekins

That is probably the greatest compliment a person can pay me.

Hopefully each life that touches us helps us to grow and so true of Scotsgait too. Lives may only touch on a computer screen but I believe many have a lot to thank TLJ for.

Apart from that he is a Jambo so he must be all right.
