My wife and I had a brill day out yesterday. We went to South Queensferry and took the fast boat from the pier to Inchcolm Abbey out in the Forth. Then back to South Queensferry for lunch in the bistro there. A brisk 10 minute walk then took us to Dalmeny Station where we got a train for the spectacular trip over the bridge to North Queensferry. We followed the well laid out history trail through the town then walked up to the road bridge. It was early evening and the sun had come out so the walk back over the Forth was wonderful. We were a bit footsore when we got back to the car at Hawes Pier car park. A short drive took us to what might be the best fish and chip shop in Scotland – The Golden Chip in Linlithgow. Superb freshly fried plaice and great chips quickly served by cheery staff – the perfect end to a day out. There are far too many indifferent fish and chip shops but my other favourite fryers are located in Pittenweem, Anstruther, the harbour at Troon and for an English one try Seahouses in Northumberland. What’s your favourite?

Its a Bit far for a day trip, but Lennox's on Barrack St in Cork is an institution.

Fast, friendly and quality.

I wasn't there last night but I was a week ago ! It's less 5 mins walk from my house and is one of our favourite chip shops (not that we frequent that regularly).

Real "black bitches" (the name given to natives of Linlithgow because of a black female dog) rate Cabrelli's above the Golden Chip but we don't !

Ah, the Sun chippy on the corner of King Street and Sinclair Street was where we all used to go at lunchtime from Hermitage Senior Secondary. When I was there in the early sixties they did a special pie & chips at lunchtime for 10d. You got a full portion of chips but the mutton pie was a specially made small version about six or seven cm in diameter. In these days they had a sit in section at the back and the better off kids went there. A crap diet at lunchtime is not the prerogative of modern kids. The Sun is still there but it's much altered since the sixties and it's no longer owned by Italians although I believe it is still quite a high class place. I must make a point of trying it the next time I pass.
There were several chippies in Helensburgh in these days and whilst the Sun was much admired there was another one near the station that was notorious. The owner was reputed to run a brothel for the hundreds of sailors who drank in the town at the weekends and his grizzly old father ran the chip shop. It was popularly believed that the old guy tested the chip fat for readiness by gobbing into it. If the gob sizzled satisfactorily he lobbed the chips in. I never actually saw this happen but the place was a bit of a dump and the guy looked like a character from “Kitchen Confidential” so most folk avoided it.

I'll second Zanre's as well although I'd say the Buchanhaven shop is the better of them, although I've not been there for a couple of years. I think they now have the Mintlaw chipper as well, which was/is pretty good.

Also good that way is the chipper in Pitmedden, just off the main road.

Anstruther as well & of course the Bervie Chipper in Inverbervie & the Carron in Stonehaven.

The one in the street opposite the tower in Dufftown as well & the one in Ballater has improved drasticly in recent years.

Nothing like a good supper after a day in the hills or out fishing IMO.

Any of the Bervie chippers, the one in Arbroath, Inverbervie and Stonehaven, all absolutley brilliant, oh and the Ashvale in Eberdeen needs to get a mention too.

Years ago there was one in Granton on Spey that was to die for, oh and the Anstruther Fish bar is not bad, but all the Chippies in Anstruther are good.

The Golden chip in Dunfermline takes a bit of beating too!

Oh man all this takl of chippers is making me hungry...........
