Uses historical original and contemporary reference to show how the inhabitants of Scotland saw themselves (and those outside).

A brilliant and interesting read!

Honest.

What periods in history are we talking about here, KH?

I was fairly impressed with Prebble's works - albeit he mixed fact with conjecture - but it made them extremely readable. Have you an interest in any particular era?

Hi dws,

Kinghob's book, Unwon Cause, If I recall right, covers the period from The Declaration of Arbroath to The Treaty of Union.

I was never much impressed by Prebble in his writing of history where Scotland v England was concerned. I always thought him more than just a little biased. Also, as you say, he sometimes (perhaps purposely) mixed fact with conjecture. Pretty much like a Scotsman journalist.

When talking about the Auld Alliance between Scotland/France, Prebble uses Shakespeare's play Henry V as historical evidence. He states

"they (the French) might have agreed with Shakespeare's Henry V about 'the weasel Scot raiding the nest when the eagle England was in prey." What he fails to mention is that during the time of Henry V and for many years after, the 'weasel Scots' had a standing army in France fighting (and dying) in battles against the English in their thousands.
