Scotland has a long history of journalism, with the oldest continuously produced daily newspaper being the (Aberdeen) Press and Journal.  The "P&J" was first published as the Aberdeen Journal in 1748 and has maintained its circulation base in the NE of Scotland and in the Highlands and Islands, with the main stories being focussed on these areas (it is said that the headline reporting the loss of the Titanic read "NE MAN LOST AT SEA - Titanic sinks" !!).

Although The Scotsman and The Herald might wish to describe themselves as "national" newspapers, they also do have strong regional readerships with The Scotsman being associated with Edinburgh and the East of Scotland and The Herald associated with Glasgow and the West (its title was the Glasgow Herald until 1992). Tayside is covered by the (Dundee) Courier & Advertiser. The main tabloid is the Daily
Record.

The Scotsman, Herald and Record all have Sunday editions published as Scotland on Sunday, the Sunday Herald and the Sunday Mail respectively. The Sunday Post is often referred to as being a Scottish "institution" published by DC Thomson who also own the P&J and the Courier.

The only news broadcaster which covers the whole of the country with radio and television is BBC Scotland. The Scottish Media Group (which formerly owned The Herald newspaper) owns Scottish Television and a number of local radio stations.
